Turn The Zone Into A House: More Places For Quicknotes

Category: Zone BBS Suggestions and Feedback

Post 1 by Dusty (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 18:07:53

I'm sure this idea must have been suggested but what the hell, I think it's a good one. I believe there's a definite case for creating additional "rooms" for users to send public quicknotes, each with a different theme, name and rules. Once again I've just witnessed a discussion of an adult nature in publics. A few people objected to it and got told to turn their publics off if they don't like it. Yes this is one suggestion but I'm not sure this "one-size-fits-all" approach can work forever, and may even put people off logging in to publics.

Why not give people the choice of what kind of discussion they want to take part in (and with whom)? At the moment it's like going to a party in a studio apartment, a couple starts screwing on the floor and the only alternative to watching is to face the wall. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go and sit on the stairs and "make out", or go in the garden for a smoke and a chat? No sex-talk in the lounge, no under-18s in the bar, that kind of thing.

Another thing - which will probably be disagreed with - I know the oft-toted line is that "we are not your parents" but I'm not entirely comfortable with explicit discussion or language going on while 13-year-olds are reading,

can this idea be coded? Has it already been rejected? Shoot me down, go on!

Post 2 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 18:51:10

I like this idea and i suggested something simmilar in the past but you put it through in a better way than i did then.
I hope your effort will be more successfull lol.

Post 3 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 19:04:18

I like it. One of the reasons I often keep publics off is because there is no intelligent conversation going on. Sure, I like to be silly sometimes, but at others I'm just not in the mood for the nonsense that goes on. So having "rooms" for different types of discussions would be great.

Post 4 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 20:17:44

I think it an interesting idea in theory. How would you like to see it implimented? I mean I see your point, I'm just not quite sure how it'd work in practice. Do you invision some sort of page where you could subscribe to certain feeds, like the general channel (logins, logouts, etc, greetings), intelectual chat, etc? or something else?

Post 5 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 20:19:41

we saw it with ventrilo. Eventually, conversations will bleed over into different sections of the quicknotes. Remember the adult channels on Ventrilo? how long did that last. Finally some of the people just said, for lack of an easier way to put it, Fuck it. They let the underaged into those spots, and so...nothing happened.

Post 6 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 20:24:21

Hm. I remember on multiple ocasions the underaged being asked to leave the adult channels on vt. Plus, an adult channel, if that was what was wanted, could be a bit more easily enforced on the site, because it's coding (when's your birthday.)
Personally, I've never really liked the idea of saying "you're not allowed because you're this age or that," for most things, but I'm usually in the minority with that view.

Post 7 by SEPTEMBER-TWILIGHT (CAN I TALK? PLEASE?) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 20:38:03

Well, as a teenager myself, I have to say that this is a grate idea. Sometimes, when I log in to the zone, I hear stuff being said, that seriously, I don't want to hear. I mean, sex talk is fine but come on, some people go way overboardon it. I just think that if it's possible, we should put Dusty's idea in to use, cuz its really grate. People have different moods sometimes and some people might not want to talk about the thing that the whole zone is talking about. This may let people who never turn their publics a chance to talk and interact with other people more

Post 8 by Dusty (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 21:31:16

I hardly used Ventrilo so I don't know what the result was there but for this I envisage a system where you have a number of places for public quicknotes, each with independent and discrete streams. So for example at login you put in your name, password and which room you'd like to start in (or you default to a general starting place). While in that room you'll get all private quicknotes (cos everyone can see where you are) and the public quicknotes from people in the same room as you. An additional command would be added in order to allow you to move rooms at will (unless you were restricted by age etc) and each room would have a theme so you'd know what to expect in there (clean chat, adult chat, help and advice etc). So yes, I suppose in ways it would be a text version of a Ventrilo server. I hope this is clear?

Post 9 by BB (move over school!) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 22:16:34

I agree with this idea. I would like to see something like this being used.

Post 10 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 22:40:18

I like it in principle, but I also like the thought of random things happening in random spots.

Post 11 by Queen Rogue (Generic Zoner) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 23:29:50

Hmmm...interesting, very interesting. This is something that the zone needs. For majority of th convo's on this thing, most of it not apprropriate for younger zoners. I hope this idea can go int affect soon. Sounds like a lot of fun to me, nd won't be so boring.

Post 12 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 3:22:19

Maybe we could have a room for those who can't type or spell worth a damn. That way they could chat with others who can't spell/type/use decent grammar and no one will care because none of them will be able to understand each other.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Now back to the serious comments...

Post 13 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 5:05:18

*shoot dusty down*, no hold up I agree. Seriously mate, I love this idea. And the idea of having a lobby, where you go when you first log in, where you see it all is a good one too. That way if you don't care so much what you read, you can just stay there. I wonder if it can be implemented similar to pqn's? The ones who code must be able to differentiate between zoners in order to send pqn's to the right places. So could that not be extended in such a way as to only send qn's to users of a certain type? Those with preference clean chat, for example.

Cheers,
Simon

Post 14 by Thunderstorm (HotIndian!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 5:57:02

If any of you seen the ftp site, (for-the-people.com), there they got different rooms for different tastes, you know. such a lots of rooms with various interests. but that's an audio site though.

Of course it's a good idea but dono how far it'd work out for this text chat thingy.

let me imagine now, if I wana talk about sex, there would be a combo box for selecting the room? and in which do I wana select 6969 and do I wana hit enter on enter room button? Rather if I wana intellectual conversation, do I wana select lutherk and bigbala room in that combo box? hehehe.

Post 16 by SEPTEMBER-TWILIGHT (CAN I TALK? PLEASE?) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 6:55:47

roflmao raa+j. omg, lol, that made me laugh extremely hard

but yeah, the various rooms sounds grate. for example, sometimes, i need technical support and i dont have anyone in hand to help, and if we have like a tech help room or something, the geeks can help us less fortunates. lol

Post 17 by soaring eagle (flying high again!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 8:42:56

I like the idea, I don't mind having fun to, but who wants to hear the bullying, the cussing and the sex talk all of the time. The zbp has rooms for over 18 so it seems as some code can be made?

Post 18 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 9:53:33

i support this idea, 100 percent. go dusty!

Post 19 by Thom3of5 (Do the Doo.) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 11:07:14

I also, as a premium menber, support this idea. There might be some minor flaws, but it will be a step in the right direction.

Post 20 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 11:40:44

I think this idea can work, but that there should be a main channel where everyone goes for just general chat. I also think the qn quiz should have its own channel so that it can eleviate all the extra clutter for those who want to play it. The idea has been brought up to the staff, and we'll see where it goes.

Post 21 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 12:55:55

LOL Becky!!!

Seriously though, I do like Dusty's idea. It sounds like it would be really hard to code, but I hope it's possible.

Post 22 by louisa (move over school!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 13:39:58

Hello, I think it's a very good idea. Don't know how it would be implemented, but I stil think it's good.

Post 23 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 15:56:49

I like the idea dusty. I also agree with becky's post 2, that's y i keep public quicknotes off too.

Post 24 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 16:18:17

Oooh, two really good suggestions just above. Love Scott's idea of a special channel for quiz takers on Sunday afternoons to eliminate discussions and distractions from people signing on and asking what's up and such. The other idea I really like is the tech room. I don't ask techy questions on public qn's often because I've seen certain people shoot down people for asking questions. Some people just don't seem to like helping others.

Post 25 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 17:35:31

love this idea also.

Post 26 by flcomputergeek (Its my opinion, take it or leave it. ) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 18:59:44

absolutely 100% in favor ofdusty's idea. I've often thought the minimum age limit for this site should be set to 18 because of what minors may read in the public qn's or some of the boards. Implementing Dusty's idea would make it easier for minors to choose what they want to read regarding public qn's. great suggestion dusty! hope to see it implemented soon!

Post 27 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 21:12:13

Count me in. Great idea. I love the suggestioons in post eight. I also think there should be a game room for those who wanna play with the dice or discuss their luck with the other games on here. I know we have the boards, and they're wonderful, but they're just not the same as real time chat. Btw, agree with post 26 and the age limit.

Post 28 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Friday, 12-Sep-2008 9:30:57

hmm, at least have the age as 16, that's when some teens start with the whole sex thing.

but I too agree with this idea, it sounds like fun

maybe we should have a room for those who like screwing around with the randomizer too? just a thought

Post 29 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Friday, 12-Sep-2008 10:19:55

This begins as a great idea, but like everything else, it is already getting somewhat out of hand with ideas as to what to have rooms for. why not just have a room before you can breathe?

Post 30 by Morgan_Lynn (Account disabled) on Friday, 31-Oct-2008 12:03:41

i agree with kev, but i all so agree with the others.

Post 31 by CrazedMidget (Sweet fantacy's really do come in small packages!) on Friday, 31-Oct-2008 15:03:07

I agree, different rooms would b really cool, and that way u can participate how u want.

Post 32 by lights_rage (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 01-Nov-2008 1:58:32

I have an idea the /join <room> works or have a switch qn room link with a list with a join button but have the shortcut in for people familiar. I love the idea cause frankly i am sick of the bull goin on round here sometimes.

Post 33 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Sunday, 02-Nov-2008 12:23:12

Yeah...but the bull goes on no matter what you do I guess.

Post 34 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Monday, 03-Nov-2008 10:42:50

yes, that is true, but sometimes you just want to have a serious conversation, with out all the bull, so I think this is a really good idea.

hmm, i like this idea but I don't think we should block miners or anything like that from some rooms just because of age, let who ever make there own choices, or remove the hole thing about "not being parents" on the front page.
but yeh, there will eventually be a problem with too many rooms and such.

Post 38 by JH_Radio (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 11-Nov-2008 22:24:42

I do not think this is a good idea for one reason. so let's say I wanna talk sex talk and about computers, and music, and give advice too? do I have the abillity to join all 5 rooms at startup? not to mention everything spilling over into different topics in each room, anyways. then what. we have moderaters for each room? Doesn't this idea completely shoot down the "We are not your parents" etc? raising the age limit will surely pisss some people off. all the sudden , someone s who is say 15 logs on and it goes "You are not able to log in due to your age restriction. Your account will become available in 3 years, 2 months, 5 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes and 36 seconds from now. Or does the new age limit apply to only new accounts that are created?
No, very very bad idea this is. I dont think it would stop things from goin on in different rooms that aren't suppose to be there for one, unless there are moderators. Someone also who is say 15 isn't not aloud in a bar because of the conversation that might be goin on at the table behind him/her. Why should we stop people from seeing what really goes on? People wil hear stuff on the street , or out in public. Why should the internet be any different? I mean its not like this is a public school (not that things don't go on in public schools, too....)

Post 39 by bluestar (captain ) on Saturday, 15-Nov-2008 18:08:07

yes I totaly agree with this idea.. but another good thing would be if for cases were you get more then one private quick note. if you could like some how typ a cepret message for ech one with sepret text boxes for user and then send allof of them at the same time whenyou click on send

Post 40 by illumination (Darkness is history.) on Saturday, 15-Nov-2008 19:48:53

I completely agree with this idea. It would be wonderful if we put separate chat rooms for those under the age of 18, and also for those who don't like sexual talk.

Post 42 by Rune Knight (Ancient Demon - Darkness will always conquer Light!) on Sunday, 16-Nov-2008 16:21:19

Yes having different rooms for quicknote would be nice everytime I come on here I see 4 to 5 different conversations going on and once and gets confusing after awhile.

Maybe for premium you could like make it to where you can create a room and have a list of users of your choice that you want to invite in and if someone who's not ont he list tries to come in it'll say "You are not permitted to enter" or something like that so you can control who can and who can't be involved with whichever convo your having. This should only be strickly for premium users though the rest who aren't can use quicknotes as they are or talk through pqn.

Post 43 by Rune Knight (Ancient Demon - Darkness will always conquer Light!) on Sunday, 16-Nov-2008 16:22:51

Think of it as a teleconference would be except with quicknotes and your own room.
